Congratulations on finding our Cuir Cùlaibh Geocache!
In 1910 Alasdair Macleod, along with many others, left his home in Assynt and emigrated to Canada. At just 19 years old he and the other 1200 passengers spent ten days aboard the ‘Southwark’ before arriving in Quebec. Alasdair wrote this song two years later describing his travels. In 1955 Kate Ross, a local singer from Lairg, recorded a version of the song for the School of Scottish studies. Megan was researching music local to her and found this song in the brilliant resource of Gaelic stories and song from Coigach, ‘Osgaig mhòr a’ bhainne mheilis, Bad a’ Bhuna is Bad a’ Ghaill’, published by the Achiltibuie Piping School.
